Different types of dishwasher detergents contain different combinations of ingredients. Common components include: Phosphates: bind calcium and magnesium ions to prevent limescale deposits associated with hard water. They can cause environmental damage and have been partially banned or phased out. Oxygen-based bleaching agents (older powders and liquids contained chlorine-based bleaching agents): break down and bleach organic residues. Non-ionic surfactants: reduce the surface tension of water, emulsify oil, lipid and grease residues, and prevent droplet formation during drying. Alkaline salts: these are a principal component in older and original dishwasher powders. Highly alkaline salts attack and dissolve fats but are extremely caustic (potentially fatal) if ingested. Salts used can include Metasilicate , Alkalimetallhydroxide , Natriumcarbonat usw. Enzymes: break down protein-based food residues and, in some cases, oil, lipid and grease deposits. The enzymes used are similar to those employed in laundries. Corrosion inhibitors: often sodium silicate; prevent corrosion of dishwasher components. Dishwasher detergent may also contain: Antifoaming agents: foam interferes with washing performance. Foam can impair the operation of the machine’s water-level sensors and can escape past the door seals. Additives to slow removal of glazes and patterns from glazed ceramics Fragrances Anti-caking agents (in detergent granules) Starches (in tablet-based detergents) Gelling agents (in liquid/gel-based detergents) Dishwasher detergents are generally strongly alkaline (basic). Low-cost powders can contain sand. Such cleaners can damage both crockery and the dishwasher. Powdered cleaners are more likely to cause fading of porcelain patterns. In addition to older-style dishwasher cleaners, there are biodegradable dishwasher detergents. These detergents can be more environmentally friendly than conventional detergents. Manual dishwashing detergents (dishwashing liquid) produce abundant foam composed of bubbles that can escape from the dishwasher.
