Biodiversity: Why it matters Biodiversity is the aggregate of all distinct living organisms within a defined area. It is a key indicator of ecosystem health and has direct implications for humans. Ecosystem functions and services High biodiversity contributes to ecosystem stability and resilience. Each species fulfills specific functions within the ecosystem and thus contributes to its overall operation. For example, plants generate oxygen through photosynthesis, while animals provide pollination, pest control and seed dispersal. Economic significance Biodiversity also has economic relevance. Many foods, medicines, materials and raw inputs originate directly or indirectly from living organisms. Reduced biodiversity can therefore affect the availability and quality of these products. Cultural significance Biodiversity holds cultural value as well. It forms part of our natural environment and shapes identity and culture. Many people value the beauty and variety of nature and seek recreation and recuperation within it. Threats to biodiversity Biodiversity is, however, threatened worldwide. Habitat loss, climate change, pollution and overexploitation of natural resources are among the factors reducing biodiversity. It is therefore important to implement measures to protect and conserve it. Conclusion Biodiversity is a critical aspect of our environment. It supports ecosystem health, the supply of economically important resources and cultural identity. We must take steps to preserve and maintain it so we can continue to benefit from its diversity and services in the future.
