Bees: Importance and Characteristics Bees are of great importance as pollinators for our ecosystems. They pollinate flowering plants and thus contribute to the production of fruit, vegetables and other foodstuffs. There are around 20,000 different bee species worldwide. In Europe approximately 560 species are known, including the well-known honeybee. Bees live in a complex social structure and are known as colony organisms. Each colony consists of a queen, workers and drones. The workers collect nectar and pollen and take care of brood care, while the drones are solely responsible for mating with the queen. Bees also have a notable ability to orient themselves in the dark using their dance behavior. They communicate information about food sources and the location of the hive. Unfortunately many bee species are threatened with extinction. The reasons are varied, including habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change. It is therefore important to protect and preserve bees and their habitats. This can be achieved, for example, by creating bee-friendly gardens and using natural pesticides.
