Application: Apply only dry (loses effectiveness in rain or high humidity). Scatter thinly, do not „pile up“. Ideal locations are gaps, run edges, threshold areas, behind baseboards or under patio furniture where it remains dry.

  • Dosage guideline: a very thin, visibly continuous trail (a few grams per meter). More is not better; it generates more dust.
  • Safety: Do not inhale dust. When applying, use a mask (fine-dust protection) and gloves, keep children and pets away, then collect residues deliberately. Do not „blow“ it into the air.

For the kitchen diatomaceous earth only makes sense if it lies dust-free and inaccessible (e.g. in a gap behind a panel). It is unsuitable on work surfaces.

Chalk, talc, baby powder: short-term, weak in wind and moisture

Lines of chalk or powder can confuse ants. In practice they rarely last long outdoors: wind, dew, rain and foot traffic destroy the line. Indoors they can work if the location stays dry – however the benefit is usually smaller than that achieved by proper sealing and trail management.

Cinnamon, clove, essential oils: scent barrier with clear limits

Cinnamon and other strongly scented spices can disrupt runways. The problem: ants „learn“ alternatives, and the scent dissipates. Why salt and baking soda on pathways are not a good idea

For paths, terraces and joints, however, salt is problematic for environmental and material reasons: it damages plants, reaches wastewater/groundwater and can attack materials. Therefore: baits must be attractive, but their effect must not set in too quickly — otherwise the animals die en route and transfer into the nest stops.

Borax/boric acid: effective, but not trivial and not always recommended

Many recipes with Borax or boric acid circulate on the internet. Both can be effective, but they are not harmless. These are substances that can be problematic for health if handled incorrectly (ingestion via mouth, mucous membranes). Therefore: if children or pets could have access, homemade Borax baits are not a good idea.

If you nevertheless decide on a boron-based bait, these safety principles are more important than any ‚recipe‘:

  • Use only in enclosed bait stations that cannot be opened or licked out.
  • Place out of reach of children/pets (behind covers, in crevices, under fixed boxes).
  • Never leave openly on plates or in bowls in the kitchen.

Regarding dosage the general rule is: with boron-based baits ‚more‘ is often counterproductive. Concentrations that are too high repel or kill too quickly. Baking soda/baking powder: an overrated home remedy

  • Treat only where necessary: no blanket applications “just to be safe”.
