Manage stress better
Each of us has something in life that drives them. That is good and normal, but often suboptimal, even harmful. Therefore it is always important to find the right balance between a certain workload and the methodology required to achieve a given goal.
Different variants:
When assessing whether a situation or process is stressful, you must look at which variant applies and whether it might even be beneficial. There are two types:
Healthy stress:
To enable people to work efficiently and meet their targets, temporary stress can even be beneficial. Optimizing processes and minimizing sources of error can be achieved through so-called routines. If the objectives ultimately represent something positive and stressful situations are only temporary, then this is also a form of motivation that does not affect health. It is important to coordinate or direct oneself in order to better manage or even suppress stress in such situations.
Coping better with unhealthy stress:
This occurs, for example, when working in the service sector and having to meet high daily targets that push the limits of what is feasible. Delivery drivers must deliver a certain number of packages, pizzas or other items to the respective customer within a given time. These employment relationships are often accompanied by conflicting interests. Employers often try to squeeze employee performance to the limit. Employees, in turn, depend on their job to provide for themselves or their family.
In the long run, this breaks people down physically and mentally. Unfortunately, this happens almost daily. Various options or tips can be considered to minimize stress. Either you quit a job that is too stressful and look for something less stressful, or you find a way to approach the work more calmly. As a small counterbalance, it is also possible to take relaxing baths after work and allow oneself personal periods of rest. However, this is not a permanent solution, because it does not eliminate the cause of the stress.
What stress can do:
Stress itself makes you ill, we all know that. In the long run not only the body but also the mind and not least the immediate environment suffer. In everyday life everything very often has to submit to stress. As a result, in the evening one either falls asleep completely exhausted or the opposite occurs. One is wound up, finds no rest and experiences sleep disturbances. Coupled with social pressure and competition among colleagues this can eventually lead to serious illnesses such as cardiovascular problems, strokes or others. If time permits, one can try to work off the previously accumulated frustration through yoga or compensatory exercise. A purpose-built offering such as courses or interest groups can help.
Prevent stress and cope with it better:
So that stress does not determine one’s own life or that of others, one can try to prevent it or at least manage it adequately. The previous and following tips can help with this:
1. Time factor and choice of profession:
Allowing yourself time is always good advice. Many of us, in a stressful situation, say that we have no time for this and that. That is not correct. In principle every person has the same amount of time; only priorities differ. While one person works eight hours a day as a social-insurance-contributing employee for a company, another is active as a freelancer during the same period. While a permanent employee often has to meet time constraints, a freelancer can usually organize their working hours independently. In the end everyone must decide for themselves how they want to generate their income.
Choosing the right professional path and keeping working hours in view can help to organize daily life more comfortably. There is much truth in the saying: „Time is the fire in which we burn“, which comes from the eighth Star Trek film. It determines our birth, our life and our time of death. It is therefore important not to run away from it, but to define it as a personal companion. Reducing stress and gaining time for the important things in life can therefore also be a goal to be achieved.
2. Coordination of processes:
Many situations and routines can be planned; particularly in leisure and private life no stress needs to arise if you approach it correctly. If a vacation trip or a day excursion is imminent, a plan should be made taking the following questions into account:
What do I need and what do I not need?
Why is item XY required?
What time frame do I want to set for myself?
What costs need to be considered?
What alternatives are there if XY does not work or is not available?
Many stressful situations can be avoided through timely planning. The Christmas season and the purchase of gifts is a recurring, predictable phenomenon. Why not buy some gifts already in the autumn, ideally online? That way you have all presents long before other people crowd the shopping streets during the pre-Christmas season to rush their purchases. Items are often then sold out or overpriced, which in turn causes stress and time pressure. Each of us can take steps to prevent that.
3. Set priorities:
Often in everyday life you do not know which task to tackle first. Many people feel it is important to meet everyone’s expectations. In doing so, they usually neglect themselves, leading to inner dissatisfaction, restlessness and, not least, stress. Almost everyone will have been in such a situation at some point, when sound advice is hard to come by. But there is a solution here too. Setting priorities can be learned and trained. Why not postpone unimportant tasks and deal with them later? Leave work alone for a while and defer lower-priority projects? For many of us this step is difficult.
No one wants to offend, cancel on or let someone down. But people with character and empathy will understand when you communicate honestly and clearly that a task or project XY cannot be realized right now. If relatives are coming for a visit in the evening and your best friend wants to meet for lunch that same day, both meetings should not be scheduled within a very short time frame. Meeting the best friend the next day allows you to fully focus on the family gathering. This creates sufficient time for both meetings spread over two days, without stress or guilt.
4. Choose the right environment:
„How you make your bed is how you lie in it,“ as the saying goes. Choosing the right circle of friends and colleagues can result in surrounding yourself only with people who would not take it amiss if you decline an invitation. It is very unpleasant if your social circle would no longer invite you to a birthday just because you carried out a family activity on that day that had been planned for a long time. At this point everyone should ask themselves: do you really need an environment that only causes psychological stress and makes you feel guilty because you had no time?
Conclusion:
Each person must find the right way and method to prevent or manage stressful situations. Some achieve this through sports programs, others use the tips mentioned above or adapt them as needed.
