The founders wisely ensured that the company could not pass into other hands but remains self-owned. Sonett was therefore transferred into a foundation. This not only supports the preservation of the company but also charitable projects and people with disabilities.

Because Sonett feels committed to the environment, Sonett obtains its entire electricity requirement from a small hydropower plant. The cooperation with the Camphill workshops „Lehenhof“ expanded the workforce potential. It also contributed to supplying both operations via a jointly used wood-pellet district heating network.

Synthetic ingredients are taboo at Sonett

A Sonett detergent must contain neither enzymes, nor petrochemical surfactants, nor synthetic fragrances, preservatives or dyes. The same credo applies to all Sonett cleaning products — and even more so to all Sonett Sensitive detergents. For the production of a Sonett washing or cleaning product, only olive oil, sunflower oil, coconut or palm fat bearing the seal of an ecological cultivation association may be used. The same quality requirements apply to the essential oils used to scent many of the Sonett products.

All Sonett washing and cleaning products must comply with the „Nature Care Product“ (NCP) standard. In this way Sonett supports the highest possible quality standard for ecological detergents and cleaning agents. Since the two company founders do not do things by halves, Sonett was CO2-certified in 2011 as a „climate-friendly company“ according to the „STOP CLIMATE CHANGE“ standard. In addition, since 2015 Sonett has been allowed to carry the „Certified Sustainable Economics“ (CSE) label, which is awarded by the „Gesellschaft für angewandte Wirtschaftsethik“. The certification includes social and ethical standards alongside ecological ones. The anthroposophically run company is committed to these standards in any case.

Everything depends on water

Sonett detergents are designed so that water is regarded as the actual cleaning agent. Founder Beate Oberdorfer makes clear that Sonett detergents should merely support the natural washing power of water. This means: at Sonett water is neither abused nor contaminated. All soaps used in Sonett cleaning and washing products are made from fully biodegradable oils. At Sonett these must be 100 percent from organic cultivation. If a Sonett detergent is labeled sensitive, it may contain no allergens whatsoever.

Where water is used as a diluent, it is vortexed and energized. Rhythmized substances are added to every Sonett detergent and every Sonett cleaning product. This is intended to support the re-naturalization of greywater. Aggressive ingredients and techniques such as genetic manipulation or nanotechnology are taboo in a Sonett detergent. The ecological principle and the regenerative capacity of water are given highest priority. In doing so Sonett sets a standard that few competitors consistently maintain.

Because of the population’s understandable desire to enjoy clean and deep-clean laundry, more than 800,000 tonnes of detergents plus unknown quantities of fabric softeners flow into the wastewater every year. Most people are long aware of the environmental consequences. That does not necessarily lead to a change in behaviour, however. The advertising industry ensures that. The slogan of „deep-clean purity“ still catches on. Unfortunately so does the „spring-fresh scent“ of fabric softeners.

Conventional detergents and cleaners, as well as fabric softeners, contain environmentally harmful substances. The most harmful among them are the surfactants. They consist of toxic petroleum derivatives. Following them are ingredients such as optical brighteners and numerous fragrances. These substances place a considerable burden on the environment.
